Can you change your car colour? Nine cars and 30 days

VW Bora before painting in silver and after painting yellow with ARMOR COLOR coating

Changing the dominant body colour does not require anyone's consent. It requires a report: in Poland you have 30 days to visit the vehicle registration office so the data in CEPiK matches what is parked outside your house. The rules make no distinction between paint and wrap, so you can skip the stories about wrap "not counting".

That 30-day window has a legal basis: article 78, paragraph 2 of the Road Traffic Law obliges the registered keeper to tell the starosta whenever a factual change means the registration certificate no longer matches the car, and colour counts as one of those details. The act does not attach its own fine to a late or missing colour update. None at all. That is different from skipping the report on selling a car, which carries a flat 250 zloty penalty, or registering a bought vehicle too late, which has cost 500 to 1000 zloty since 2024. What actually costs money is the respray or the wrap itself - see our full cost breakdown of repainting or wrapping before you buy the pigment.

The new Polish registration document no longer lists the colour. That does not mean nobody knows it. The colour sits in CEPiK, and the database is consulted by the police, registration offices and vehicle inspection stations. The second phone call goes to your insurer, because a policy describes one specific vehicle. We make a coating, we do not interpret regulations - call your own office and your own insurance company, because procedures vary and the responsibility is yours, not the paint seller's. Outside Poland the rules are different, so ask the authority that registers your vehicle.

Germany runs on a different clock entirely. Under paragraph 13 of the Fahrzeug-Zulassungsverordnung, a colour change goes to the Zulassungsstelle at the next point someone handles the vehicle's papers anyway - a re-registration, a change of keeper - rather than inside a fixed window like the Polish 30 days. Skip that and the theoretical ceiling is a 2,000 euro fine under paragraph 24 of the StVG, though bussgeldkatalog.net lists the actual fine for a missed notification like this at just 15 euros, not 2,000, and not every clerk at the Zulassungsstelle has even heard of the rule. What the Zulassungsstelle actually cares about is warning colours - the ones reserved for emergency and specialist vehicles. A civilian car in one of those shades draws scrutiny fast, wherever you register it. Everything else is filed for statistics and police identification, and the periodic technical inspection does not check paint against paperwork at all.

Painting or wrapping the roof alone, or the bonnet, or the sills, needs no report. A black roof on a light car is still a light car.

Nine cars, nine colours

VW Bora before painting in silver and after painting yellow with ARMOR COLOR coating
VW Bora: from silver to yellow. The hardest direction there is.

The Bora is the case where most people come unstuck. Yellow, red, orange and green cover poorly and need a white or light grey primer, and the colour underneath has to be uniform across the whole body. If your car is patched with filler, sits in two shades of silver and has one door from a scrapyard, then before yellow you first have to build one background. Without that you lay coat after coat and you can still see where the filler ends.

Subaru Impreza, silver before, RAL 7016 after.

RAL 7016 is the colour number mentioned most often on the Polish internet when the conversation turns to cars. Anthracite is forgiving: it covers from the top and does not need a light primer. On top of that ARMOR COLOR dries to a grainy satin matt, and a matt, rough surface scatters light instead of reflecting it like a mirror, so it does not draw those long streaks across the panel that gloss uses to show every wave. We covered that whole build separately in the piece about the Impreza in RAL 7016.

Two yellow cars out of nine is a result you cannot reconcile with the OTOMOTO ranking. Poles buy

  • black (27.51 percent),
  • silver (13.99),
  • grey (13.79),
  • white (13.13)
  • and blue (9.86).

Yellow is nowhere in the top five. Whoever paints a car themselves on the driveway reaches for a colour that was never on a dealer price list.

Audi A6, mint. A colour outside the swatch range, made from base and pigment.

ARMOR COLOR is not a ready colour, it is a base for tinting. You add pigment at 10-15 percent calculated on the base, which is 60-90 ml per 600 ml tin, and 15 percent is a ceiling, not a target. Above that limit the coating can lose durability, and that is the only reason you cannot make an arbitrarily intense shade in one go. The order is not free either: pigment into the base first, mix, and only then ACTIVATOR at 3:1. The other way round does not work.

The ARMOR COLOR swatch range itself has 11 entries, among them GRAPHITE GREY, NATO GREEN, OLIVE GREEN, SKY BLUE, TRAFFIC WHITE and SAND BEIGE. Mint is not there. The customer mixed it himself, and that is the normal way of working with this product, not a workaround of the instructions.

Mercedes ML, graphite. Big car, big surface, panel by panel.

You do not paint a whole car from one batch of mix. You do it panel by panel. The mix stays usable for about an hour at 20 degrees, so mixing a supply for the entire car ends with half of it gelling in the bucket. Besides, every hand-tinted batch is entitled to differ slightly in shade, and the border between panels hides that far better than a streak halfway across a door. Write the pigment proportions down on a piece of paper with the first batch, because you will repeat them on the sixth. With a car like this remember one more thing: bumpers and trim are plastic, not steel, so they go a different preparation route - degrease, abrade with a scuff pad, adhesion promoter. Graphite on the bonnet and graphite on the bumper have to come out of the same batch, otherwise the difference shows in the first sunshine.

The paint goes on brilliantly.

The full screenshot of that conversation sits on the page for this build, together with a photo of the invoice.

Why the little square on a swatch lies

A colour seen on a monitor and a colour on a bonnet differ physically, not aesthetically. A monitor emits light and a body panel reflects it, which is why the only reliable way to judge a shade is a physical sample in the final gloss level. ARMOR COLOR dries to a grainy satin matt. The same shade on smooth gloss and on grain looks different.

Then there is scale. The square is three centimetres and lies flat, while the side of a car is two metres and curved, so light hits it from a dozen or so angles at once. Dark colours on a large curved surface come out darker than the swatch suggested, and light ones brighten in the sun to the point where the shape of the body gets lost.

What we will not write

What about selling the car

A car painted in a colour outside the maker's catalogue sells to a narrower audience. A buyer looking for a silver estate will not click on a mint one. It works the other way too: a yellow Bora finds the one person who wants exactly that car, and the price stops being an average of the listings. If you reported the change on time, the papers match the vehicle and the sale goes through normally. If you did not report it, the problem surfaces at the new owner, at the first inspection or the first claim.

More photos of customer cars are collected on the reviews page, and questions about mixing and substrates come back in the FAQ. The base for tinting is here: ARMOR COLOR.
